Easter Island: A Warning for Our Times

This is a short clip from the BBC's series, State of the Planet.

First, the distinguished E.O. Wilson talks about the importance of the "preservation of creation," and then David Attenborough discusses the previously mysterious disappearance of the inhabitants of Easter Island, as well as the lesson we should learn from it.

And here's some more:

Jared Diamond makes the same point in his book Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed. Diamone uses the same analogy: our current global behavior is indistinguishable from that of the inhabitants of Easter Island, and unless we stop depleting our natural resources faster than we can replenish them, the same fate that drove them to extinction will befall us as well.
