The other day I overheard a discussion between two people wondering why NASA doesn't seem to have any plans to look for life in Venus the way they are doing in Mars, especially when the sizes of Earth and Venus are so similar. Before they got a chance to start dreaming up conspiracy theories about secret cities in Venus and government cover-ups, I quickly pointed out some of the basic reasons: you could bake a pizza pie in Venus in about 9 seconds just by leaving it on the planet's surface. Don't use an oven made of steel, though, because Venus is hot enough to melt it too... Oh, and did I mention the tremendous atmospheric pressure that could crush our potential pizza maker? :)
What I don't know is whether our greenhouse gas emissions could ever produce something on the scale of Venus. Anyone know?
