A few weeks ago in this blog, and as part of the documentary series
Planet Earth, Sir David Attenborough took us along in a fascinating journey through the underground world of
Caves. Something that was left out, however, was the fact that a great series of cavernous structures in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico was formed, it seems, from the colossal meteor impact that is widely believed to have killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. A three-dimensional map reconstruction of the area reveals the evidence pointing to this conclusion, as well as the awesome power of nature.
If we replaced the dinosaurs as the rulers of the world, who might replace us when we're gone? My money is on the chipmunks :)
.
I knew about the Chicxulub crater, but I didn't know those cenotes were a result of it; pretty cool. The comment at the end was amusing; it sure sucked for the dinosaurs, but hooray for us mammals!
