The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

For those of you behind on the news, like me, you should know that this month marked the 50th anniversary of the proclamation and adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

It's difficult but imperative to recognize that so long after the unspeakable atrocities of the Second World War, there is still so much work to be done. Now, you may or may not question the metaphysical basis for this declaration of rights (as I do), but regardless of its philosophical soundness, this seems to be a pretty decent set of principles that ought to constrain what people and governments may and may not do to individuals.
