End Day

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN will fire up in a couple of months, and there are those who worry it'll bring the destruction of the universe. Some have even filed lawsuits on the grounds that it could create black holes that could swallow the Earth. Scientists dismiss these charges as sensationalistic and unfounded, but since the very purpose of the LHC is to find answers not yet known to fundamental questions, it seems that a priori rebuttals might be just as empty as the charges.

In any case, while some worry about the impact of the LHC, there are other ways, far more probable and catastrophic, that could bring about the end of the world as we know it. The following documentary movie reenacts some of these possible scenarios (asteroids, tsunamis, viral epidemics, super volcanoes) in a Groundhog Day style, with some fantastic visual effects.

Wouldn't it be funny if the plaintiffs in these lawsuits were asked to back up their claims? What could they offer as evidence? They'd have to fire up the LHC... The universe goes poof. Who won the lawsuit? :)
