The Möbius Strip

The Möbius Strip is one of those inherently interesting mathematical objects that everyone loves. It is a surface with only one side, which is an interesting property in and of itself, but the real fun begins when you start to actually play with it.

As the following videos will show you (and you should totally try to replicate these fun experiments at home), cutting a Möbius Strip in half results in something you might or might not be able to predict just by thinking about it. To complicate things, if you try cutting the original strip from a third of its width, the result will be even more impressive.

And here are just a few of the fun experiments you can run with a Möbius Strip, and the possible consequences...

Now be creative and start adding twists to the original strip and run even more experiments! I'll show you how to visualize this kind of topological object in three dimensions soon with a Klein Bottle.

In the meantime, check out this amazing animation of Möbius Transformations. Even if you don't like math, you'll appreciate the elegance and simplicity of this abstraction and, who knows, you might even learn something new and fun...
