Turing Test

Since I just posted an entry on robot consciousness, and then serendipitously found the following cartoon (from xkcd) about the Turing Test, I couldn't not post it... it was simply too good to pass up.

By the way, for those of you who may not know what the Turing Test is, it is a test, thought up by Alan Turing (the father of modern computer science) as an attempt to ascertain when a machine becomes intelligent. The basic idea is that, in lay terms, if you can instant message with a machine and not realize it's not a person, it's intelligent (or at least intelligent enough to fool you).

I'll be posting a documentary partly about Alan Turing soon, so watch out for that.

  1. Thanks for your comment, Huoyangao. I'll read the attached document as soon as I get some free time. From the sound of your excerpt, it certainly sounds like an improvement on the original Turing test, especially as a way to overcome the philosophical problem of other minds, although I wonder whether it ignores the definitional question regarding intelligence: how do you define intelligence? Got any thoughts on that?
