Multiplication made easy

If you're one of those people who are not very mathematically inclined, here is a very neat way to perform multiplications: represent them graphically.

I don't know how long this method has been around, or who figured it out, but it certainly seems to expand on Descartes' original genius that mathematical objects can be represented visually.

Does anyone know of other cool tricks for other arithmetic operations?
